How to Email a Resume….and how not too

I have seen the worst of the worst when it comes to unsolicited resume submissions by email.

I’ve received unsolicited resume emails with nothing in the subject line, nothing in the body and a resume attached.

I’ve received resumes to my inbox with the subject line “Hey” with body text that says “thanks”.

I’ve received email submissions with War and Peace in the body also.  So much so that my head hurt after the first two paragraphs and I liked that guy!

PEOPLE.  Seriously.  Use some common sense!  There are all kinds of opportunities to submit your resume to organizations and get their attention but PLEASE use some sort of etiquette.

It’s just this easy:

Subject Line: Unsolicited Resume Submission | Christopher Anderson | Position Desired

Body:

Sir or Madam,

Please accept my unsolicited resume submission for the position of (name your position).

I am an expert in the (your skill) industry and wish to make a positive impact on your organization with my experience and qualifications.

I have reviewed your careers site and noted that my experience is well-aligned with your business model.

Please review the attached resume at your convenience.

Thank You,

Christopher Anderson
(your email address)
(your phone number)

End

It’s just that simple people.  Be polite, be concise and be positive.

Also note that most large organizations will ignore unsolicited resume submissions but they work very well for small businesses who do not regularly post jobs.

About Recruiting Babble

I am a professional recruiter, operations manager, technical writer, proposal manager and capture guy. Much of my work has been performed for defense contractors both in the U.S. and abroad in places like Iraq, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kuwait and Qatar. I want to dispel the mysteries that surround the job search, the interview process, which resume to use and to generally help my fellow man (unemployed man mainly) understand the processes behind the work I do so they can hone their skills and get that job.

  1. Great advice. Wish more candidates would think through the process prior to submitting.
